The Lost Detective: Becoming Dashiell Hammett by Nathan Ward

(August 13) I’ve been a fan of Dashiell Hammett for almost two decades at this point in my life. Like Raymond Chandler, he piqued my interest in detective fiction at an early age, which eventually led me to develop a love of noir films and even to become more open to other genre fiction like sci-fi. So, I figured I’d love a book about Hammett, tracing the overlaps between his life and his work, digging deep into the Pinkerton influence, etc. etc.

Not true. Or, rather, not true for this book. I’m only about a quarter of the way through, so I’m writing this to give myself the motivation to finish…

This post is part of #MySummerOfMysteries, a project to immerse myself in mysteries, thrillers, crime writing, and whodunits. For each book I finish, I’m posting brief thoughts and reflections here. Please note that these are not intended as full reviews. To view my reading progress throughout the summer, click here.
